Jewelry enthusiasts as well as gemstone connoisseurs have long held the belief that birthstones carry in them a unique and mythical property for each person. Birthstones are nothing but classification of gemstones according to the month of birth of a person, and they can also be associated with wedding anniversaries in many countries.  By different cultures and through time, birthstones have been specifically classified as traditional, modern, mystical or ayurvedic to each and every month. Some types of birthstones can be quite precise: for example, pink tourmaline instead of regular tourmaline jewelry or star sapphire instead of sapphire.

The following below are the list of birthstones according to month, associated with either society based traditional or standard modern lists.

    1. January.  Garnet is the gemstone for January, in both traditional and standard modern lists.  Garnet is classified according to six types: pyrope, almandine, spessartine, grossular, uvarovite, and andradite.  The classification of garnet is based upon the different shades of colors of the gemstones – for example the almandine group is red to violet hues while the pyrope group is deep reds.  Garnet is a stone to look for a successful business, but the stone also signifies purity and truth.
    2. February.  Amethyst is gemstone for February. The word amethyst means “without drunkenness” so it used to be worn to guard against the hazy state of mind being drunk and to keep a sober thinking process.  The stone also symbolizes piety, humility and spiritual wisdom.
    3. March.  Bloodstone and Jasper, as well as Aquamarine.  Bloodstone symbolizes justice, jasper for physical healing and aquamarine to enhance and deepen your meditations.
    4. April. Diamond and Sapphire for this month.  Obviously, diamonds are crown jewels because they are the hardest stones, and a diamond is also a symbol for constancy and innocence.  Sapphire is referred to as “the stone of destiny”.
    5. May.  Emerald and Agate.  Emerald is associated with Venus and this stone signifies faithfulness and love.  Agate attracts strength.
    6. June.   Alexandrite, Moonstone and Pearl.  Alexandrite is considered to be a lucky stone.  Moonstone is passion and good fortune.  Pearl is purity and innocence.  It is said that emerald is also a birthstone of June.
    7. July.  Ruby and onyx for this month.  Ruby is all about passionate love and its healing properties concern the circulation of the blood in the heart. Onyx helps you release painful emotions.
    8. August. Sardonyx, Carnelian and Peridot.  Sardonyx brings courage and self-confidence. Carnelian stimulates both motivation and creativity.  Peridot is the stone from Mother Nature, and is also considered to be symbol of morality.
    9. September. Sapphire and peridot.  Sapphire contributes to mental clarity and financial rewards, especially blue sapphires.
    10. October.  Tourmaline, Aquamarine, Opal. Tourmaline will bring love and friends, especially a pink tourmaline pendant.
    11. November.  Citrine and Topaz. Citrine is being referred to as the “stone of the mind” – it protects you from negative energy.  Topaz encourages confidence and banishes bad dreams.
    12. December. Zircon, ruby and turquoise.  Zircon protects you from diseases and insomnia. Turquoise on the other hand, is considered to be a protection amulet against harm and negative energy.
