Recent statistics shows that a significant number, accounting for almost 75% of all brides in America, were given engagement ring by their grooms to be. This tradition of engagement traces back in 1477 when Emperor Maximilan I of Rome presented his future bride with a diamond ring, thus starting a grand custom that will be practiced from generation to generation across the globe.
Perhaps the reason for the engagement tradition’s endurance is in its meaning as each beautifully crafted ring holds a symbolism of promise, of permanence. And in this day and age, this promise holds an even larger significance for you and your bride to be. Wearing of this ring symbolizes a symbol of commitment to beginning a journey of life together, giving it signifies your vow to her and accepting it returns the favor back to him.
The ring’s circular shape also holds its own share of promise as the circle represents perpetuity. It has no end and goes on forever. It is the most appropriate meaning of all to be shared with your engagement, signaling an eternity of your commitment to be with each other, this ring will now hold the two of you to your promise to creating a life together, in perpetuity.
In some ancient cultures like that of the Egyptians as well as in early Rome, rings were painstakingly crafted from tall grasses like reeds. This rings may not be as valuable as a diamond ring but it is their way of making their commitment of devotion. The reason for which is that early belief suggests an important link between that of one’s heart and her fourth or ring finger, like a connecting vein that binds the promise made through the ring all the way to the heart.
Of course,as with other ancient culture, the practicing of crafting a ring from plants has been discontinued, and for very good reasons. With the discovery of diamonds comes a much more grander, and daresay more expensive, alternative to the traditional ring. Its origin alone is properly suited to what an engagement stands for. The word diamond was derived from “adamant” a Greek word which means steady, unfaltering and indestructible. The very things a marriage should be made of.
And now this age old practice of giving rings to take someone’s hand in marriage is no longer etched in stone, but in diamond. Because of its value and toughness, the diamond ring has placed itself at the pinnacle of all engagement rings, surpassing other stones. Its indestructible quality further strengthens the meaning that two individuals make at being engaged.
