In ancient times charms and amulets were used for luck. They were also used to identify beliefs, social status, and affiliations. They were used for religious purposes and carried into battle for an extra safety precaution.
In about 700 BC the ancient Babylonians started wearing charms on bracelets. Since this was an easy way to have and display all of ones charms and amulets needed for the day. As people became less superstitious charms became more of a decorative adornment and less of a religious symbol or a symbol for luck.
In Victorian England charm bracelets and necklaces became all the rage as a status symbol. In the 1930′s collecting and wearing charms and charm bracelets became all the rage and many a Birthday or Christmas a collector would receive a single charm as a gift.
Different versions of charms and charm collecting developed in the 1950′s and 1960′s. And each era reflected what was going on in people’s lives at that time. Charms usually reflect events, hobbies, or interests in ones life.
Even though each era had it’s specific traits, most of the life areas overlap, as well as charm styles and materials. With a charm bracelet one can chronicle their life from important events, to travel occasions, to personal likes and interests.
